Gillian was very pleased to be invited to work with Withernsea Lighthouse on a series of trails based on World War One as part of "Joining Up : The Humber and the First World War"
Withernsea Lighthouse developed a new exhibition on Withernsea in World War One with artefacts, photos and ephemera donated by the local commmmunity. A model was also created of the little known, but very important, troop preparation camp at Mona House, near Roos, now almost totally demolished. At this camp some 16,000 soldiers either recuperated or trained ready to be sent into France, amongst them J.J.R Tolkien and the war hero Sir Gilbert Mackereth M.C.
Gillian produced a set of trails for KS1, KS2 and KS3 students to investigate the World War One exhibition and troop Camp at Thirtle Bridge. She also researched local newspapers for primary evidence on World War One in Withernsea and created a set of resources, teacher notes and pre and post visit suggestions for KS1, KS2 and KS3.
