Queen Victoria’s visits to York

Discover the stories behind the visits of Victoria and Albert to York and the celebrations that the city organised.

In 1850 Prince Albert hosted a dinner for over 200 guests in the Guild Hall, York, to publicise the 1851 Great Exhibition. It was on this occasion that the celebrated chef Alexis Soyer, inventor of the soup kitchen and portable stove, created the “Hundred Guinea Dish”.

Four years later Victoria briefly visited the city, but was never to return.
