King John, Magna Carta and the Northern barons

In 1212 the city of York gained a charter from King John which allowed the citizens to rule themselves. York had gained its independence, but now found itself in the middle of a civil war between King John and his barons. Both sides threatened to attack the city and York had to pay heavily to protect its citizens and their property.

Discover the story behind York’s charter of 1212 and why the rebel barons forced John to sign the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215.
