The Rebellion of the Northern Earls, 1569

The Rebellion of the North in 1569 was the most serious rebellion of Elizabeth ’s reign and resulted in the devastation of many northern families, particularly the Nortons of Norton Conyers, the Markenfields of Markenfield Hall and the Metcalfes of Nappa.

In the aftermath of the rebellion some 600-700 rebels were subjected to martial law and hung outside their own towns and villages, and many local gentry were executed for their part in the rebellion.

The punishments dealt out by Elizabeth including fines and confiscation of estates were the harshest of any Tudor monarch in the aftermath of a rebellion and ensured that the north could not rise again for many a generation.
