How did the Tudors change the North of England?
The Tudors were the first monarchs to really control the north of England. They undermined the powers of the traditional ruling families, families, the Percys and Nevilles, by creating new earldoms and placing trusted men in positions of power. The Tudors extended and consolidated their royal control through the Council of the North in York and effectively conquered the north of England.
Tudor changes in religion hit the conservative north of England harshly, where many clung to their Catholic faith. This resulted in two northern rebellions against the crown, the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536, and the Rebellion of the Northern Earls in 1569, which had major impacts on our local areas.
