William the Conqueror & the Harrying of the North

In 1066 William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings, but this was only the beginning of the conquest of England.

The north resisted the Norman invasion and rebelled in 1067, 1068 and three times in 1069; in January, Easter and the summer. Each time William the Conqeror raced north to subdue the rebels and he built castles to try to keep control.

In the summer of 1069 Yorkshire rebelled for the third time that year. This time the rebels had allied with Scandinavia and in August nearly 300 ships from Denmark arrived to support them. This was the most serious threat to William’s conquest.
