In 927 Athelstan, King of Wessex, seized the Kingdom of Jorvik from its Scandinavian rulers and “succeeded to the kingdom of the Northumbrians”. But “Yorkshire” regained its independence after Athelstan’s death in 934 and only finally submitted to the House of Wessex after the assassination of Eric Bloodaxe in 954.
