In June 1141 Empress Matilda, the only legitimate child of Henry II, was preparing to be crowned. She had defeated King Stephen, her cousin and rival, and taken the city of London, but her plans were foiled on 24 June when the Londoners rebelled. Matilda had to beat a hasty retreat and was never again in a position to take the throne. This day school examines the career and reputation of Empress Matilda. Was she “lifted up into an insufferable arrogance” and unsuited to be Queen , or did she pave the way for our female monarchs of the sixteenth century?
