Henry Percy: “the Hotspur of the North”

Starts: Saturday 22 May 2027, 10am to 1pm BST

According to his contemporary, Froissart, Henry Percy, eldest son of the 1st Earl of Northumberland, was “so fierce in battle that his enemies named him ‘Haatspore’ for his fiery assaults”. Percy was often “hot on the spurs”, attacking Scottish raiding parties that dared to cross the northern border.

Later immortalised by William Shakespeare as “he that kills me some six or seven dozen of Scots at a breakfast”, Percy’s pursuit of honour was portrayed as fanatical and destructive, leading to his own death in rebellion at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. But how much of this is true?

Was Hotspur vaingloriously seeking honour at all costs, or had Henry IV betrayed the Percy family, broken his promises, withheld monies owed, and deliberately excluded them from power?
