Starts: Saturday 8 May 2027, 10am to 1pm BST
In 1314 the largest English army ever to invade Scotland was decisively defeated by Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn. This defeat meant that the major routes into England lay unprotected and the Northern Counties suffered successive years of devastating Scottish raids, which even threatened the city of York. The English king Edward II’s authority was severely undermined, leading to increased political tensions in the English court, and ultimately to rebellion against his rule.
This course examines the causes of this historic battle, part of the Scottish struggle against the dominance of the English kings, and the consequences of Bannockburn for the North of England.
