The Scottish Conquest of the North and the Battle of the Standard 1138

Starts: Saturday 24 January 2026, 10am to 1pm GMT

In 1138 David I King of Scotland, and Prince of the Cumbrians, invaded England to complete his conquest of the North of England, having conquered parts of Lancashire only two years previously. Thurstan, the sixty-eight year old Archbishop of York, gathered an army to repel the Scots which carried the standards, or banners, of York, Durham, Beverley and Ripon Minsters. This day school examines the reasons why David I invaded, the course of the Battle of the Standard and why his army was defeated.
