Edgar Aetheling – the last Anglo-Saxon king?

Starts: Saturday 23 January 2027, 10am to 1pm GMT

After the death of Harold Godwinesson at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, fourteen year old Edgar Aetheling, last heir to the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom, was briefly proclaimed king, but as the Normans advanced he soon submitted to William the Conqueror. Edgar fled to Scotland and led rebellions against the Normans in the 1060s, but twenty years later he was involved in the wars between the Conqueror’s sons. This course considers the career of Edgar Atheling who survived two Norman Kings.
