The Rebellion of the Northern Earls in 1569 was the most serious rebellion of Elizabeth I’s reign, and resulted in the devastation of many northern families.
Some 600-700 rebels were subjected to martial law, and hanged outside their own towns and villages, and many local gentry were executed for their part in the rebellion. Others fled to Scotland or the Spanish Netherlands.
The punishments dealt out by Elizabeth I were the harshest of any Tudor monarch in the aftermath of a rebellion and ensured that the North could not rise again for many generations.
